Dr. Tozier’s Winter Sports Party: “Everything but checkers on the ice”

Argyle Socks and Hunting Jackets: a winter afternoon on a frozen lake. A large man in a raccoon coat attempts to ice skate, badly; push sleds and ice boats are trailed by a congo line of children. “They played everything but checkers on the ice.”

”They played everything but checkers on the ice.” - So freaking great.

In less than three hours, the boats will start the sprint to Abu Dhabi at 0930 local time (0530 UTC) to complete Leg 2 of the Volvo Ocean Race. There’s no video Livestream this time around, but for those of us watching the 98 mile race from home, the race tracker will be updating every 60 seconds. Ian Roman will also be shooting and uploading photos to Livestream starting, he said, at approximatly 0600 UTC, about a half an hour after the race starts. Too bad I’ll sleep right through most of it.

Dear land-based life forms,

Fantastic day. We started with windless bobbing from 4:00 a.m. until 8:00 a.m. We punctuated this inertia by catching, on a hand line, two mahi-mahi, a very beautiful fish-fish! They both were laid to rest in a small Tupperware coffin surrounded by lime juice and chopped onions.

Spent the afternoon dodging wind holes and watching dolphins play in our bow wake. We’ve also been introducing our English crew to the joys of grits. They are dubious, but too polite to admit they tossed it overboard.

We are on four hour watches and lucky to get three hours’ sleep at a time. Those of you familiar with totalitarian regimes will remember that sleep deprivation is one way that dictators break their enemies.

We are in good position thanks to our skipper, Tim Scarisbrick, first mate Bertie Whitley and second mate Chris Miller.

We all smell wonderful. See you in Bermuda!

AC45 TV Trials in New Zealand.

Ooooh boy. So slick. Love that TV viewers will be able to see laylines as they shift with the wind and hear onboard communication between the sailors. This will be fun to watch.

That said, I do wish that the folks producing these videos would explore an alternative stock music collection. One that reflects the innovation of the sport while referencing its history, rather than auditory cues that scream, “THIS IS EXCITING. NOW THIS IS SERIOUS.” I don’t want to notice (or in this case, be distracted by) the music. These boats and this technology? Shit speaks for itself.

Stepping down from my soapbox now…
