Rockport, Maine - January 15, 2012 by Peter Ralston

It was cold yesterday morning - I hear about minus four - so I took a little walk down to the harbor for a gander. Lots of sea smoke with a light but cutting northerly wind. I love this harbor of ours this time of year. Yesterday it was just me and a few sorry-looking gulls. The few boats still in appear resigned to their winter on the water. The island and the lighthouse look very, very far away right now.

They used to squash bananas on the launching rails here. It was easier this way to get the finished boats into the water. The rails, made of wood, ran from the shop floors down the bank and into the creek. The banana-squishing was a cheap and ingenious Depression way of greasing skids.

One of the more random things I’ve learned from reading Hemingway’s Boat.
