Dr. Tozier’s Winter Sports Party: “Everything but checkers on the ice”
Argyle Socks and Hunting Jackets: a winter afternoon on a frozen lake. A large man in a raccoon coat attempts to ice skate, badly; push sleds and ice boats are trailed by a congo line of children. “They played everything but checkers on the ice.”

Rockport, Maine - January 15, 2012 by Peter Ralston
It was cold yesterday morning - I hear about minus four - so I took a little walk down to the harbor for a gander. Lots of sea smoke with a light but cutting northerly wind. I love this harbor of ours this time of year. Yesterday it was just me and a few sorry-looking gulls. The few boats still in appear resigned to their winter on the water. The island and the lighthouse look very, very far away right now.
Some of you have asked me about what in the heck I’m doing up in Northern Maine these last few weeks.
This (segment on NATIONAL NPR!!) should give you a clue!
The County! Winter games!
Today I discovered that the Amphitheater in Camden was transformed into an ice rink. Brilliant!
Ice sailing (LOC) (by The Library of Congress)
This otherwise lovely snow (not too much, not too wet) we received last night has unfortunately put a damper on local ice (which to this point was on a perfectly smooth freezing streak). Too bad. We’ve got one or two of these skate sail rigs waiting to be used.
