Soul! December 13, 1972 : Black Fire
Actress Cicely Tyson and bluesman Taj Mahal talk about the movie Sounder, which starred Tyson and Mahal; Mahal also does some selections from his soundtrack to it. Exuma, a folksinger who uses some Bahamian rhythms, also performs. Hosted by Ellis Haizlip.
Taj Mahal’s thumb piano playing is dreamy. Cicely Tyson’s corn rows are enviable and Exuma’s guitar player’s Puss in Boots get up is like really spectacular. Holy 70’s!

…we thought about this funny video the band posted on July 14th on their blog, where they play “1901” with an awful iChat wallpaper as a background. Eh, why don’t we do it again, but for real this time ?”
Which reminds me: Paris for my 30th is going to happen, come hell or high water.
WHO HERE REMEMBERS S-CLUB 7?
UM DUH
RAIGHT HERR RAIGHT HERR
Whoa. This song was the jam while I was backpacking through New Zealand in the spring of 2000. I had just graduated, completing a late 90’s high school experience that was musically defined by the likes of Phish, Dave Matthews and Ani Difranco. New Zealand offered a shift in perspective for both life and music.
One night at a college uni bar in Christchurch (NZ’s drinking age had just changed to 18, so I was even legal), I remember being totally surprised that when S-Club 7 played the entire establishment sang at along the top of their lungs (waving their hands in the air) to this pop song. Even though the video is cringe worthy, at that moment in my life, the pop song sing-along was pretty much the most refreshing thing, ever.
It’s been a good ten years since I sang in a group, but this makes me want to join a choir. I don’t want to give away the surprise, but nature sure does inspire…
Thanks to Saphrona for the enlightenment.
Rock My Boat (Ft. Mia Doi Todd) - Dntel
(via the influence of Kelly)

There were a slew of bands that performed at the “Hell No On One” event, but Spencer and The School Street Mafia was the band that totally peaked my interest. It seems I’ve become too accustom to three and four person bands, because my socks were knocked off by this gang. There were horns! Strings and things! Yeah. Experiencing the energy of a 12 person band is rad. Wicked rad.
Check out some cool pix from their cd release party last March at SPACE.
Found: the magic wand for iTunes housekeeping. Dupin is also helpful.
Tom Waits - Hoist that Rag
Numbah one jukebox impulse lately. Gilbert’s could really use a gritty but soulful, chillaxed but groovalicious band in its arsenal.
