This unbelievable octopus is so ghostly and unusual that it occupies its own family, Vitreledonellidae. Little is known about this marine animal, but it can be found in tropical and subtropical waters around the world. Thanks to its transparent skin, scientists know that its optic lobes have unusually long optic nerve stalks, meaning its sense of sight is acute.

Marmo’s magic cousin?
Marmo? Is that you? Not sure if it’s just because of Puma Ocean Racing (Marmo, an octopus, is their mascot) that I’m now aware of the mass quantities of octopuses posted on Tumblr, but I feel like I see them all the time. Marmo was a bit ticked off at me yesterday when we sailed right through a pod of whales – six to be exact, and I screamed for everyone to “hold on!” They appeared right off the starboard side and looked to dive under us at the last possible second. I nearly had to change my undies. Marmo wants us to be more careful.
