Apparently 60 Minutes has decided that ageism is now okay? The promotion of blatant generational stereotypes is now an acceptable way to sell ad space? I guess I’m fine with it, if you are. Let me know if I’m getting the wrong message from this segment. Otherwise, it’s on, old man.

I caught this segment earlier tonight and couldn’t wait to rail on it: an entire segment bemoaning some perceived pampering of the latest college grads, dubbed “millennials.” Sorry there’s not a draft going on right now, CBS producers. I’ve come to expect this from Andy Rooney (along with 100,000 prescription drug ads) but interviewing exclusively motivational speakers to prove your point is not journalism.

Ugh! I’m really sorry I’m not popping out babies and answering phones in the call center up the road. It’s unfortunate that I’m a disappointment for living at home patching up a childhood of resentment towards my mom and stepfather who got married when I was seven. I kinda think that relieving this animosity is a good thing. Not to mention I want to live in Maine, but Midcoast Maine isn’t exactly booming with work potentail. So for now, it’s odd job here, odd job there. To be here, near my family, in Maine… it’s totally worth it.

Just because my generation hasn’t been punching a time clock since we were eighteen (or twenty-one, or whatever) doesn’t mean our generation doesn’t have its own set of challenges to overcome.

In the light of the rate of failed marriages of our parents… it’s no wonder we value lifestyle and friends and family over career commitments. That said, I think this idea was totally blown out of proportion, without giving a proper reflection of why.

But blah blah blah, 60 Minutes generalized and made our generation appear petty and absurd by focusing on footage of us bouncing on balls, dancing in parades, and being handed certificates of recognition plastered with stickers of stars and shit… thanks for the mock, man.
