Apparently the idea that the word yacht is used primarily as a way to describe a medium-sized sail or motor boat equipped for cruising or sailing, does not exist in the tagged world of Tumblr.
LOL?

Last Boat
We were waiting for the ferry, lolling on the lowest ramp, on floats, shifty with wave slush, dip and sway. We were sun-seared, sapped, soaking in the latticework, wooden scaffolding, stacks of lobster traps, pilings stained black from creosote and tar, green with seaweed combed out on receding waves, swirled back by water’s slap and curl: levels and lengths of working docks, creaky planks,...
Beautiful Dangerous Work

A photo essay on Maine urchin diving by our friend Grahm Letorney for the Salt Institute.
Ha. Nice follow up to my urchin research a week or so ago! The Salt Institute in Portland (ME) cultivates the skills of some wonderful storytellers.

I’m still reeling (and recovering) from the closing of Gilbert’s Publick House, the last blue-collar bar and music venue in town. Maybe this is the world telling me it’s time to turn over a new leaf, void of late nights with random rednecks and yachties.
Oh, that revelation just made me sad. I miss my melting pot already.

Gilbert's Publick House Closing Sunday
gilbertspub:
After 22 years, Gilbert’s Publick House has reluctantly decided to close its doors. Gilbert’s thanks its customers for the years of faithful patronage.
Gilbert’s will be open regular hours through Sunday, January 17th and invites you to come down for a farewell drink and game of pool or pong.
I can’t even express how much this is tripping me out right now. My favorite...

Remember those t-shirts that people used to wear that said No Fear on them? I bet they were actually scared about a lot of things, but it would’ve been weird to wear a shirt that said I’m Afraid About A Lot Of Things.
A friend’s family named their J24 sailing yacht No Fear. No joke.

That is one of the great unsung heroes, that’s a scholar, a poet and a cook,...
– Anthony Bourdain on Conte’s, a very, very funky waterfront restaurant in Rockland, Maine.
More interesting tidbits about his trip to Maine can be found in the Bangor Daily News article. (via Jenna)

Portland of the East
Any of you P-town Tumblr peeps bowling in the Bowl Portland league this winter? If you are, I’m coming to town for the kick off party! Let’s hang and post and reblog each other ‘n stuff. I’ll be floating (as is me custom), but home base will most likely be with the fishnet/polka-dot MADbott gang.

Two things I've learned from Facebook today:
Anthony Bourdain and his tv show thing are here in Midcoast Maine filming. (Sighting of both Bourdain and people filming reported.)
College of Chuck won some (big?) basketball game against someone.

Live and Work on a Container Ship →
wreckandsalvage:
You have friends with weird jobs and got to know more. Our friend Marty works on cargo ships sailing from port to port across the globe… Always wanted to know what the hell he does exactly and thus this blog was born… Besides being a working man on the sea, Marty makes some great paintings which you’ll see below… These are his words and photos.
Life as a seaman is so epic. My...
